The varmala ceremony is one of the most important ceremonies at any Indian wedding. The ceremony is a sign of promise to accept and respect each other as bride and groom do by exchanging garlands. This is one of the most important ceremonies an Indian wedding. The exchange of Garland means marriage and the beginning of a new life together. Varmalas are flower garlands and style of these garlands vary from community to community within India. You can choose the flowers depending on the theme of your wedding. Like for example, if you have a very traditional wedding, you can go for flowers like roses, marigolds, mogras or lilies. For a beach wedding, you can get a plumeria wreath. Orchids also are delicate and lovely and is quite popular in Indian weddings. The most important thing you should keep in mind while choosing the flowers is the availability. Some flowers can be seasonal.
Fragrance – This is something you should keep in mind. Flowers such Mogra looks very beautiful, but has a very strong scent. Although some flowers can be sweet-smelling, you should be careful as aroma can overpower your perfume and other items around. We would suggest going with a mildly fragrant flower or an unscented flower.
Colors – The colors will depend on the flower you choose to go with. We would suggest choosing a contrasting color to your wedding outfit, so the colors do not merge. There is no rule of thumb for choosing the color of your varmala … just go with what you love!
Embelishments – Add a little twist to the traditional varmalas by incorporating embellishments like beads, crystals or motives for doing varmalas more interesting. You can match the decor to something from a design on your wedding clothes for a logo of your names. Floral garlands with crystal tassles looks very elegant and unique. For a beach themed wedding you can incorporate some beads in the garland. There’s a lot you can do to spice up the look of your wedding wreath. Whatever you do, make sure you balance bling with traditional elements.
